Authentic Mexican Dress Pattern Details
My downloadable pattern instruction booklet for making a woman's
Mexican dress is based on the family heirloom shown here, which came to
me from Oaxaca, Mexico.
I could not find a good source for these
beautiful summer sundresses here in Northern California, and so I
studied my authentic Mexican dress, inch by inch, in order to create a
set of instructions from which I could make new traditional Mexican
dresses for myself.
I figured out this super easy pattern and then had a marvelous time
creating my own custom embroidery pattern that says something to me about
the unique woman I am. This set of sewing instructions plus complete
embroidery instructions are what I want to share with you.
I want to tell you what you can expect if you
purchase my PDF download instruction booklet,
based on the beautiful vintage Mexican dress you see shown here.
To the left, you will see my Mexican dress. The complete cutting and
sewing instructions, and the traceable embroidery pattern are what you
get when you download my instruction booklet.
My booklet is illustrated with 34 detailed illustrations and
full color photographs that take you step-by-step through making this
dress.
If you can operate a sewing machine, and enjoy creating beautiful
things, you can make this dress. One of the chief virtues of this
Mexican dress for ladies is that the assembly only requires cutting out
basic shapes and sewing a few seams. Nothing could be easier!

To assure you of the high quality of my easy instructions, I'd
like to share a few photos with you from the booklet.
Clear, informative graphic instructions are given for each of the
steps that go into assembling my Mexican dress. I find that a combination
of reading and looking at pictures helps me to understand instructions
best, and I have made sure to include all of the illustrations you will
need to cut and sew this dress, whether you are an accomplished seamstress
or a beginner.
Every year, the beautiful swallows come to the legendary village of
San Juan Capistrano. Here, you will find them soaring across my Mexican
dress. Their sapphire-toned plumes make for a stunning embroidery motif.
In my instruction booklet, you will find templates and super photos
to help you embroider these elegant birds.
Old-fashioned bleeding hearts add a fiery floral element to my Mexican
peasant dress. If you are new to embroidery, I will teach you how to work
the basic satin stitch that creates these intricate blooms.
In just seconds, you will be enjoying the fun of hand embroidery. However, if
you are a machine embroiderer by nature, feel free to use your machine
instead. The whole point is to be creative and have a blast!
Pretty forget-me-nots, ferns, buds and vines twine 'round my Mexican
dress, creating texture, style, and beauty. I will take you through all of
the steps of creating my original design, or you can make up your own.
You can choose your own colors, work with different flowers, or symbols
that have a special meaning to you. You can work with different fabrics.
White cotton is most traditional, but imagine this dress in sky blue,
sage green, or apricot! Once you get the basics of this dress
down, it becomes like a blank canvas for your unique creativity.
This set of instructions for a traditional Mexican dress can also be
used to make a tunic-length garment or Mexican peasant blouse by simply
shortening the length. Because the dress is based on simple shapes rather
than stiff fittings, my instructions can be used to make a Mexican dress
for a lady, a child, or even a baby.
I made my Mexican dress from start to finish in a few days because I
had some free time. You can go at your own pace, and I know that the
end result will be an incredibly lovely, classic, comfortable dress that
will become your own family heirloom.
